Consists of Burkett's memoirs, which he dictated to his son-in- law. Later, grandson J. W. Arnold prepared a typescript taking some liberties in the process. The original is in delicate condition.

In November 1835, Texas lawmakers created a corps of Texas Rangers to guard the frontier between the Brazos and Trinity Rivers. Republic of Texas pioneer, and Texas Ranger. Born October 20, 1820 near Jefferson City, Missouri. Came with his family at age nine to Texas and settled in the DeWitt Colony near Gonzales. During the Republic decade served with Captain Mathew Caldwell's Texas Ranger unit and took part in the Battle of Plum Creek (1840) and the Battle of Salado in (1842).
